We would like to take this opportunity to express our great appreciation to Professor Antoni Kukliński for his consent to become ``a case'' in our study into some of the intricacies of knowledge creation in the social sciences. The issue, which this collection of essays by eminent scholars and representatives of public life has been focused on, is the role of exceptional individual scholars in the process of knowledge creation.
This project obviously could not have been realized without the contributions of many authors, coming both from the academia and from the world of practitioners, who have been able to reflect on the importance of individual creativity in social sciences and, more generally, in knowledge development. The Editors would therefore like to express their gratitude to all of the Contributors to the Volume. Naturally, each of the Contributors was free to choose Her or His way to address the topic which had been initially proposed in our project description.

The Editors
The present volume has been intended as a case study of one particular scholar—Professor Antoni Kukliński—who seems to be a perfect example of a science leader. The idea of this collective study appeared when Professor Kukliński was approaching his 80-th birthday and many of his pupils and colleagues wanted to commemorate this event by a joint publication. After some discussion, we came to the conclusion that celebrating his jubilee with a usual collection of accidental papers could result in producing one more publication which might be quickly forgotten. Instead, we decided to look at the life and work of Antoni Kukliński as an individual case of the scholar's role in the production of social science knowledge. The idea was, then, to prepare actually a study in the sociology of science. Although in our initial project description, we clearly explained that the volume is not intended as a laudation, some contributors could not escape this approach. We have decided that such contributions also evidence something that belongs to the characteristics of some scholars and might add a particular accent to our understanding of processes in the knowledge production. Some other contributors offered interesting studies that clearly belong to the research area discussed within the “thought collective” initiated by Antoni Kukliński but gave up a direct reference to our “case”'. The remaining authors, producing analyses of Antoni Kukliński's contribution to a variety of research areas, jointly built the needed logical structure that—as we hope—successfully links all the papers in the book and will allow the readers to appreciate impacts made by the scholar—Antoni Kukliński—on the development of different fields of social science.
